Culturally Responsive Therapy with Black Therapists

At Small Victories, we believe that representation in therapy is not a preference, it’s a matter of access, safety, and quality of care.

For many Black people, starting therapy can come with added layers of concern:

  • Will I have to explain my culture?

  • Will my experiences with racism be minimized?

  • Will all parts of who I am be understood and respected?

You deserve care that meets you where you are in the fullness of your identity.

At Small Victories Wellness, we offer therapy with Black clinicians who provide culturally responsive, affirming, and clinically excellent mental health care.

Intersectionality Matters in Therapy

No one experiences the world through a single identity.

Race, gender, sexuality, class, faith, ability, immigration status, and family history all shape how stress, trauma, joy, and resilience show up in our lives. For many Black clients, these identities intersect in ways that are often misunderstood or overlooked entirely.

Our therapists practice with an intersectional lens, meaning we intentionally consider how multiple identities and systems of power impact your mental health, relationships, and lived experience.

You deserve care that meets you where you are in the fullness of your identity.

Affirming Care for Black LGBTQIA+ Clients

We are committed to providing affirming, identity-respecting care for Black clients who identify as LGBTQIA+.

For Black LGBTQIA+ individuals, therapy can feel especially vulnerable, particularly when past care has required choosing which parts of yourself to hide or explain.

At Small Victories Wellness:

  • You do not have to separate your racial identity from your sexual orientation or gender identity

  • You will not be expected to educate your therapist about who you are

  • Your relationships, family structures, and self-expression are respected and affirmed

  • Your experiences of racism, heterosexism, or transphobia are taken seriously

Your identity is not something to be “worked around” in therapy. It is central to how we understand and support you.

Why Work with a Black Therapist?

Working with a therapist who shares or deeply understands your lived experience can mean:

  • Not having to translate or justify your experiences

  • Feeling seen and understood without constant explanation

  • Receiving care that honors cultural values and identity intersections

  • Building trust more quickly and deeply

Our Black therapists bring both clinical expertise and cultural awareness into the therapy room. They understand that mental health does not exist outside of social context and that identity, power, and systems matter.

Our Approach to Culturally Responsive & Affirming Care

Culturally responsive care at Small Victories Wellness means:

  • Therapy that acknowledges the impact of racism, oppression, and minority stress

  • Care that is affirming of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression

  • Evidence-based treatment delivered through an equity-informed lens

  • A therapeutic relationship grounded in dignity, consent, collaboration, and authenticity

We do not expect clients to minimize, compartmentalize, or justify their lived experiences. Your story is valid here.
